Zach is homegrown in the Northland, having gone to high school at Duluth Marshall before graduating summa cum laude in 2010 from St. Scholastica with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

While in school, Zach was a regular writer of both news and sports stories for St. Scholastica's student, The Cable, and he also spent six months in Washington D.C. attending classes at Georgetown and working as an intern writer for The McLaughlin Group.

Before officially joining the KBJR6 and Range 11 and KDLH3 news team, Zach worked for two and a half years as a production assistant and photographer at the station.

He then spent a year in the newsroom as a general assignment reporter before accepting a job as the weekend sports anchor. After spending two years in that position working under Tom Hansen, Zach accepted the sports director job after Tom decided to retire after 23 years at the station.

Zach has grown up around Northland sports, having played both soccer and baseball at Duluth Marshall before continuing his soccer career at St. Scholastica. He also dabbled in both hockey and basketball as a kid, but gave those up before reaching high school.

When I was young, I wanted to be: Batman

Favorite story you ever worked on: UMD's Jordan Bauman beating cancer to return to football

Favorite food: Tacos

Favorite movie: "Miracle," "Tommy Boy," and "The Godfather"

Favorite CD/Album: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison

Favorite subject in school: History

Favorite book: "Oh the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Suess

Proudest Story: Covering five UMD national championships --- two football, one men's hockey, two women's hockey

Why do you like your job: It constantly gets me away from my desk and into the action. The athletes make every day worth it because they will always surprise you, and covering high school and college kids gives me an "untold story" kind of feeling you can't replace.

Dream story: Going to the Olympics
