SUPERIOR, Wis. (NNCNOW.com) --- Polarized politics in Wisconsin government was the focus of a recent civility summit.
In a rare event, Wisconsin's longest serving Governor, Tommy Thompson, met with Republican state Senator Dale Schultz and two Democratic State Senators including Bob Jauch of Poplar.
Although the four longtime lawmakers reign from both parties, they all agree that government in Wisconsin is more dysfunctional and divisive than they have ever seen.
The four politicians discussed how they were able to achieve results despite differing on several issues.
Jauch said state government needs to renew civil tactics in a seemingly fractured political environment.
"We want Wisconsin to be like it is today. At that fourth of July parade, we saw and experienced the best of Wisconsin," Jauch said. "People felt good about themselves. They want their leaders to do the same thing and at the summit I think we set that bar that that's the way our public officials should act."
Senator Jauch is retiring after serving Northern Wisconsin in the State Senate since 1987.
