MN House Approves Health Insurance Exchange Bill

March 4, 2013 Updated Mar 6, 2013 at 11:07 AM CST

St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) - After hours of debate at the Capitol Monday, a bill creating a Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange got the green light from the House in a 72 to 58 vote.

The program, established under the federal affordable healthcare act, is a new online marketplace at which Minnesotans will be able to choose health insurance.

DFL State Representative Joe Atkins and DFL Senator Tony Lourey are the authors of the bill and say by 2016 roughly 300-thousand currently uninsured Minnesotans will gain coverage through the exchange.

The exchange needs to be in place by the end of the month, otherwise the federal government will impose its own system.

The Senate is expected to take up its own version of the bill later this week.
