Minn Legislative Immunity Cards discontinued by Secretary of State

May 21, 2014 Updated May 21, 2014 at 2:20 PM CDT

ST. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Minnesota lawmakers will no longer be issued DUI immunity cards after a move by Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.

Lawmakers learned Wednesday the state is discontinuing the cards because there is no state statute that requires them to be issued.

The cards essentially provided lawmakers immunity from being arrested for drunken driving or other crimes during the legislative session.

A measure that would have eliminated any questions about legislator immunity was approved in the House, but stalled in the Senate.
