(Northland’s NewsCenter) --- Authorities have identified the Bemidji man who died after being shot while hunting on public land on the first day of the firearms season.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office says 64-year-old Donald Bixby of Bemidji was shot by another hunter, 48-year-old Phillip Nyland of Bemidji.

Authorities say the incident happened around 9 Saturday morning, in Turtle River Township.

The two men were acquaintances, but not hunting together.

Nyland has been released while the sheriff's office continues to investigate.

Medical examiners are performing an autopsy at the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office in Ramsey, MN.

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene of the shooting by the MN DNR, MN State Patrol and Bemidji Ambulance Service.

The Bemidji Pioneer reports Bixby shared his passion for hunting with his three children and was a strict teacher of firearms safety.
