Arson is likely the cause of the County 27 Fire, also known as the Karlstad fire, in Kittson and Marshall counties in Northwest Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has said that an investigation is ongoing by the Kittson County Sheriff, the Marshall County Sheriff and the DNR; they have offered a reward of up to $6,000 for information leading to the arsonist.

The fire is currently 4,440 acres and is 90% contained. Significant areas of peat will need to be extinguished.

At the height of the fire, half of the town evacuated.

On October 2, Governor Mark Dayton issued an Emergency Executive Order for the eight wildfires burning in Northwestern Minnesota.

Governor Dayton ordered active duty personnel and equipment, to help fight the wildfires earlier this month.
