Hurley, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) --- After the Wisconsin Senate's rejection to reforms on mining in the state and Gogebic Taconite's decision to scrap plans to mine in the Northern part of Wisconsin, a new grassroots effort is taking shape to support the tabled iron mining legislation.
Residents throughout Iron and Ashland Counties will be gathering at the Montreal (Iron County) City Hall tomorrow at 12pm to rally in support of the proposed iron mining legislation and to encourage Gogebic Taconite to continue its efforts to develop an iron ore mine near Mellen, WI.
Leaders with the Iron County Development Zone say some residents are frustrated that lawmakers have been unable to pass an iron mining bill. They are urging legislators to approve the proposed legislation before the current session ends later next week.
The Wisconsin Senate tabled the vote on the assembly bill Tuesday. The bill aimed to transform and streamline the permitting process for ferrous mines.
