Cummings Fire Now 40% Contained

September 5, 2012 Updated Oct 11, 2013 at 9:48 AM CST

Ely, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The size of the Cummings fire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area has increased from 40 to 50 acres due to more accurate mapping.

Fire crews are reporting that they have contained 40% of the blaze.

The Forest Service is considering a restriction on campfires in the area. A "hoot owl" restriction would allow campfires between 7pm and midnight.

Crews from Michigan replaced local fire crews in the fire. More fire crews are expected to be deployed from Nebraska later today.

Last night's storms did bring some relief to the area, however lightning strikes started three new fires. The fires are near Thunder Lake, Beartrap Lake and Hawks Nest Lake.

Two other fires have also started in the BWCA. One is near Wooden Lake with crews battling the flames through an aerial attack.

Another fire started near the Saturday Bay of Crooked Lake and is currently burning one tenth of an acre. Fire crews say that a single tree is burning in the area.

Fire crews battling the Fort Frances fire on the Canadian side of the border say that the fire is creeping north. Crews are clearing up ground debris and brush with only occasional tree torching.
