Barnum, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- One dog is lucky to be alive after the 3 year old German Shepard/Golden Retriever mix fell through the ice at Little Hanging Horn Lake in Barnum.

According to the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, authorities received a call around 4:15pm Thursday evening that a dog broke through the ice on the lake.

Once officers arrived on scene, the owner of the dog pointed to her dog that had broken through the ice more than 150 feet from shore.

Officers had to commandeer a boat from the shore in order to rescue the dog.

A responder, wearing water and ice safety gear, rode the watercraft that was tethered to the shore to retrieve the dog.

Once officers pulled the dog to shore, the dog was turned over to the owner. The dog appeared to be in good condition.

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone that no amount of ice is safe and can be unpredictably thin. Authorities ask everyone to use caution before venturing out as lakes and rivers start to freeze over.

For ice conditions in your area, you should check with your local sporting good retailer.
