February 23, 2012 Updated Feb 24, 2012 at 1:04 PM CDT

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- After 5 months of studies, the US Postal Service has decided to move the Duluth Processing & Distribution Facility to St. Paul, MN.

A date has not been set yet for the closure of the Duluth mail processing plant. Until a date has been set, the Duluth mail processing plant will remain open and functional.

Bank in December 2011, the Postal Service agreed to impose a moratorium on closing or consolidating post offices and mail processing facilities prior to May 15, 2012, to give Congress and the Administration the opportunity to enact an alternative plan.

The Postal Service has experienced a 25% decline in First-Class Mail volume since 2006, and receives no tax dollars for its operations, relying instead on the sale of postage, postal products and services.

Other facilities that will be moved into the Minneapolis/St. Paul area include, the Processing & Distribution Facilities in Rochester, St. Cloud and Mankato. The Customer Service Mail Processing Center in Bemidji will also be moved to Minneapolis.
