Governor Dayton Sends MN National Guard to Fight Fire in Nimrod

April 9, 2012 Updated Apr 9, 2012 at 3:12 PM CDT

Nimrod, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Governor Mark Dayton has issued an emergency executive order for the Minnesota National Guard to assist in the battle against a wildfire near Nimrod, MN.

The Nimrod fire has now reached over 1,000 acres and is threatening property in the area. There is also concern that with a Red Flag warning across the state due to dry conditions and high winds, the fire could spread faster.

The Governor has issued the emergency because the State Emergency Operations Center, DNR and the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center do not have the aviation resources to suppress the fire.

Earlier today, two Minnesota National Guard UH-60 “Blackhawk” helicopters with aircrew, maintenance and fuel support teams were sent to assist with fire suppression.
