Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Hawk Edwards, the man who was charged for a crash that seriously injured 13 year old Everett Bergren and killed 65 year old Paula Bergren, has pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation.
Edwards has agreed to serve a greater sentence than usual. He has agreed to serve a 4 year sentence for each crime against him. Edwards' sentence for seriously injuring Everett Bergren would have only been probation, but Edwards wanted to serve more time and be held accountable for his crimes.
However, part of the agreement also states that if Everett Bergren makes a substantial recovery, then Edwards' sentencing will be reduced.
Judge Shaun Floerke will make the decision on whether the sentence is reduced based on reviewed medical reports of Bergren's condition.
Back in January, Edwards was driving his Ford Pick-up early in the morning on January 19th when he crossed over into the median and collided with Paula Bergren's Ford Taurus head on on Woodland Avenue. Bergren was driving her grandson to school. Alcohol was detected on Edwards.
Edwards' sentencing is scheduled for March 30th.
