High Speed Chase Through Ely; Two Teenagers Taken into Custody

Ely, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Two teenagers have been taken into custody for allegedly sending authorities on a high speed chase along Highway 169 in Ely.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department, officers received a report of a stolen vehicle that had been located along Mud Creek Road in Tower, MN and was allegedly in the possession of an 18 year old Oakdale man.

While en route, authorities spotted the stolen 2000 Chevy Blazer and attempted to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle then allegedly fled at a high rate of speed, heading north on Highway 169 through Ely into Lake County.

The pursuit ended at Lake 1 BWCA parking lot after the Blazer failed to turn and went into the ditch. The car struck some rocks along the ditch, disabling the vehicle.

No one was injured when the car went into the ditch.

An 18 year old man of Oakdale, MN along with the passenger, a 16 year old girl from St. Paul, MN were taken into custody.

The 18 year old suspect is currently lodged at the Virginia Jail, waiting formal charges.

The 16 year old passenger was being housed as a runaway.

The Brieting Police Department, Ely Police Department and St. Louis County Sheriff's Department all responded to the scene.
