Taconite, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- A 69 year old man has died after he accidentally shot himself in the chest.
The Itasca County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call around 12:45pm on Wednesday April 11th of a gunshot victim in the city of Taconite, just a few miles outside of Coleraine.
When authorities arrived on scene, they found William Arthur Hanson in a mine dump with a small caliber gunshot wound to his chest.
Hanson was transported to the Grand Itasca Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been completed on the victim.
An investigation into the incident revealed that Hanson's firearm was jamming. When the victim leaned up against a truck while talking with another person, the gun accidentally discharged, hitting Hanson in the chest.
The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Meds One Ambulance and Taconite Fire Department.
