Eveleth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- A 47 year old man has been charged in connection with the theft of credit cards and firearms in Eveleth, MN.
John Carl Pape has been charged with possession of a firearm, financial transaction card fraud, 5th degree possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine, and theft of firearms. All four of these charges are felonies.
Back on Sunday, May 6th, the Eveleth Police Department was called to the United Christ Lutheran Church on a report of two cars that had their windows smashed in and property stolen from the cars.
Police say that two purses were stolen which contained cellular telephones, credit cards, cash, checkbooks, and other personal property. A loaded revolver was also stolen from one of the vehicles.
Officers later discovered that some of the stolen credit cards were being used at local retail stores. Authorities were able to identify Pape in the video surveillance footage.
Officers obtained a search warrant for a residence on the 1700 Block of 9th Avenue in Virginia, MN. Authorities found several of the stolen items from the vehicles that were broken into as well as items that were purchased with the stolen credit cards.
Three stolen firearms were also removed from the residence including the revolver taken from the vehicle at the United Christ Lutheran Church.
Pape was taken into custody at the time the search warrant was executed. Pape is being held at the Virginia St. Louis County Jail.
Pape was also identified as a suspect in other thefts and burglaries in which additional charges are pending.
