St. Louis Co., MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - The use of force in the officer-involved shooting in Babbitt near the end of January has been deemed justified by the St. Louis County Attorney's Office.
Babbitt Police Officer Jon Shenett shot Derek Klingfus with his duty gun once after Klingfus was suspected of stabbing his girlfriend's three-year old daughter.
Police reports indicate when Shenett responded to the home, Klingfus was holding the child and threatening her with a knife.
Shenett responded according to policy procedures, calling for back-up enforcement, giving verbal instructions and using his tazer before discharging his gun.
The toddler was treated for two stab wounds at a hospital in Ely.
Officials say Klingfus remains paralyzed, and is receiving medical treatments at a hospital in Duluth.
Charges against Klingfus are still under investigation.
