Minneapolis, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- 27 people have been indicted for distributing drugs in the Twin Ports area.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the defendants were indicted with one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in the Duluth and Superior area.
Search warrants were executed Wednesday at nine properties in Minnesota and Wisconsin where authorities seized firearms, ammunition, almost $30,000, and narcotics.
From 2010 through September 2011, the defendants allegedly conspired with each other to distribute oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydromorphone, and heroin.
Authorities began investigating the group in 2010 after law enforcement noticed an increase in drug trafficking in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on the conspiracy charge, 20 years on each possession count and 20 years on each distribution count.
The Lake Superior Drug and Gang Task Force, the Duluth Police Department, the Hermantown Police Department and the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.
