Hinckley, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Two people are dead and one in critical condition following a two car accident on Highway 48 near the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation.
On Monday, July 23rd around 5pm, Pine County Deputies responded to a two car accident near the intersection of Highway 48 and Grace Lake Road, about 30 minutes east of Hinckley, MN.
A minivan heading east on Highway 48 struck a sedan that was traveling west on Highway 48 in a head on collision.
An initial investigation revealed that the minivan crossed the center of the highway, smashing into the sedan.
A 20 year old man, the driver of the sedan, was killed on impact. The passenger of the sedan, an 18 year old woman was extricated and flown by Air Ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. She is listed in critical condition.
The 61 year old driver of the minivan was extricated and flown by Air Ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, where he died of his injuries.
It is unknown at this time why the black minivan crossed into the opposing lane of traffic. The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating this crash.
Deputies, Troopers, EMS, and Fire/Rescue personnel from several agencies responded to the scene.
