Northland Bakery Is Driven By Tradition & Innovation

By KBJR News 1

Sugar, and spice and everything nice are what the employees of one Northland hot spot get to work with everyday.

In this week's "Invest in the Northland" Laura Langemo highlights The Positively Third Street Bakery and how it keeps bringing people back for more.

It has been satisfying the sweet tooth of Northlanders and tourists for decades.

"We keep coming back because these cookies are so darn good."

"Every time we are in Duluth we come and we buy our cookies."

Positively Third Street Bakery opened its doors in the 1970s, but eventually a group of employees at the bakery decided to turn it into a workers cooperative.

"Three of them banded together, bought out the business, and set it up as a co-op."

Along with its retail business the co-op now sells and ships its goods to about 20 other cooperative stores across the state.
Besides baking all their sweets locally they buy many of their ingredients right here in the Northland.

"As much as we try to promote ourselves as a locally owned business we try and source ingredients in ways that further that model in attempting to develop the local economy."

Positively Third Street Bakery is driven by tradition and innovation as many of the bakery's recipes are its own creations.

Now the bakers are looking forward to continuing this recipe for success in the years to come.

Besides cookies, Positively Third Street Bakery also has muffins, bars, breads, and pizza crust.
