While growing up Susan McCalister struggled to find products that gave her hair the look she wanted.

"It was frustrating, it was. I was trying to shop for things for my hair and my hair only and I couldn't find any supplies."

When she moved to Duluth in 2007 she found she wasn't alone in finding treatment for her type of hair.

"For Jada when I first looked at getting her hair braided I was calling all the different salons and could not find one in the area that would braid."

So McCalister took matters into her own hands, opening her own salon.

"For Me For You" specializes in hair braiding but also offers products for ethnic hair, along with clothing and jewelry.

"I felt a need for the beauty supplies for me and I opened up the beauty store for you and that's where I got the name "For Me For You."

McCalister has made it a priority to offer affordable services and products so that families from all economic groups have a place to go, get what they need and feel comfortable.

"There are a lot of African Americans that have migrated here and they live here and they call this their home and they need to feel like this is their home and have this type of establishment for them."

"For Me For You" filled a niche locally, providing services that many people had been traveling outside Duluth for in the past.

"There are a lot of people that would go to the cities and pay money to get their hair braided and they have to pay for gas and they have to pay to eat there and that's money that's leaving Duluth."

McCalister built her store from the ground up through her own savings and has hopes for expansion in the future.

Susan McCalister opened her store in April of this year in west Duluth and relocated to downtown Duluth just last month.
