Northlander Turns Morning Tradition Into A Business

By KBJR News 1

Jason Wussow has enjoyed hanging out at his hometown coffee shop since he was teenager.

"Way back when I was sixteen I used to go to the coffee house everyday that opened up in my hometown and eventually I started going about three times a day."

But once he moved to Duluth he missed that hometown hangout and felt there was a need to re-create the ambience.

So he decided to open his own coffee shop.

"In the morning like this it's a great time to come in and it has kind of that old school café feel and you can meet your neighbors and have a cup of coffee."

Beaner's opened in July of 1999.

But it's not only a coffee shop it also serves as a music outlet for local musicians.

"At night it's nice to have a spot that's all ages with entertainment. Parents can grab a bottle of wine or coffee and they can bring their kids and they can have a hot chocolate."

Beaner's has operated in the Northland for a decade and it keeps bringing in customers both new and old.

"This table right back here I think these guys have been coming here for almost the last ten years."

"We come every day seven days a week and we dress up for Halloween and we put on a little show here so you might want to come and watch that."

Wussow has plans to keep Beaner's going for as long as he can.

"I guess it finally feels more like a child I'm very attached to it."

Jason Wussow recently built a recording studio in the basement of Beaner's and has hopes to begin recording live music in the future.
