Turning a Hobby Into a Career

Jim Sage and Bob Husby, friends for many years, share a passion for glass blowing.

But the two put their dreams of owning a glass blowing shop on hold as they started separate businesses... one in pottery, the other in metal.

That all changed a few years ago.

"He said you know I am tired of listening to you say you're going to start a glass blowing studio. So he said let's build one right now," says Husby.

"He kept talking about setting up a hot glass shop and I then agreed that I would set it up here at my place," says Sage.

By 2005 the hot glass shop was up and running.

"It's just fun to put together all of the colors and the elements of the glass and come up with an actual product that can be used by other people," says Husby.

Eventually Jim and Bob began sharing their passion with others as they started offering glass blowing classes through community schools and Lake Superior College.

"We learn from just the teaching process ourselves so it's been a lot of fun," says Sage.

Jim and Bob looked like they were having so much fun blowing glass so I even decided to give it a try.

Well... my artwork didn't turn out quite as nice as Jim and Bob's... but I guess practice makes perfect.

"At this point I am learning every day and learning through my mistakes," says Sage.

Bob and Jim are living the dream, getting a chance to earn a living doing what they love.

"We're very happy obviously," says Husby.
