Women’s Expo: A Northland Event For All Women
Saturday, March 8th is expected to be a great day for thousands of Northlanders who are planning to attend the 13th annual Northland’s NewsCenter Women’s Expo on at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. The day-long event, starting at 9 a.m., fills the Edmund Fitzgerald Hall and South Pioneer Hall with more than a hundred exhibitors, a garden café, and the show’s signature event, the Women’s Expo Fashion Show.
Bringing Women, Families, and Merchants Together
The Northland’s NewsCenter Women’s Expo has become Duluth’s premier event for women of all ages to sample and try out products and services that might help make their lives easier, safer, and fun. The event began in 1994 as a way to bring local women, families, and merchants together, in a way that would be beneficial to all. “There were plenty of trade shows and expos aimed at men,” says Peggy Kott, expo coordinator. “We wanted to provide an environment where people could learn more about the many area businesses who offer special products and services specifically for women and to meet each other face to face.”
Aside from vendors and products, complimentary medical screenings, therapeutic massage sessions, and live entertainment will be ongoing throughout the day.
The Fashion Show is the centerpiece and audience favorite of the day, not only showing off the latest fashions but informing women about where they can find the newest spring and summer fashions locally and at competitive prices. The show focuses less on the catwalk and more on the sidewalk, featuring fun and wearable garments for work, play, or for a night on the town.
Northland’s NewsCenter television personalities will be available once again to meet attendees and sign autographs. The Northland’s NewsCenter will also be continuing to spread the word on the upcoming digital television conversion. “People are asking about the new digital channels,” says Northland’s NewsCenter Station Manager David Jensch.
He adds, “When the government shuts down the analog television signals next February, many people are wondering what they’ll be able to watch and how to find it. We’ll explain how they’ll be able to find NBC 6 and CBS 3, plus Northland CW, My 9 and the Northland’s only 24-hour local weather channel, WeatherPLUS - all for free without the need for cable hookups or satellite dishes.”
The Northland’s NewsCenter produces more than 50 hours of local news, weather, sports and public affairs programs every week at convenient times throughout the day, including the Northland’s only Noon and 5:30 pm newscasts. The Northland’s NewsCenter added University of Wisconsin-Superior and Minnesota Wild hockey games this year to its already extensive programming line-up.
Since it began 13 years ago, the Expo has grown from a few dozen booths to one of the DECC’s largest single-day events drawing attendees from as far away as International Falls, Ironwood, MI, and the Twin Cities. As always, admission to the Northland’s NewsCenter Women’s Expo is free. The show will be open from 9 am to 4 pm and complimentary day care for two to eight year-old children is available on a first-come-first-served basis, courtesy of the Northland’s NewsCenter.
