Driving Green & Smart; A look at the Smart Car

By KBJR News 1

There are many ways to get from point A to point B, you can travel by bus, plane, train, or the latest option, the "Smart Car".

We know its small but is it environmentally friendly?
Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson takes a look in, "Your Green Life"

In the past year you may have seen one of these drive through your neighborhood. These gasoline powered cars are leading the way in efficiency and innovation, but are they green?

"I use about 25 gallons of gas less a week", said John Goldfine

Duluth business man John Goldfine thinks they're not only good for the pocketbook but good for the environment as well. Statistically speaking the smart car can achieve a gas mileage of 33 miles per gallon in the city and 41 m–p–g on the highway. In addition to being a gas sipper, the car was designed to use recyclable components and to reduce harmful emissions.

"The car is made from 95 percent recycled material and is 98 percent recyclable...It's in the lowest percentile of knocks and hydrocarbon output of any gas driven vehicle." says Jason Huber.

Jason Huber, the manager of the Smart Center in Bloomington says the smart car performs well as an ultra low emissions vehicle, but is also a practical and comfortable car. It even comes in a convertible.

"The smart car stands toe to toe very equally and easily with many of those manufactures on ride quality, certainly on build quality" , said Jason.

But how good is that ride in a Northland winter?

"I had absolutely no problem with the car last winter.", claims John.

With a three cylinder and 1 liter gasoline powered engine, not only is this car very green, it also performs very well on the road.

But its so small can it be safe?

"Four airbags, basically the car is built like the safety capsule in a formula one car.", said Jason.

Proponents of the Smart Car say its got it all...safety, efficiency and environmentally friendly. For your Green Life, I'm Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson, The Northland's Newscenter.
