Your Green Life: "Getting Ready For Winter"

By KBJR News 1

Living Green can be a year round task, with winter just around the corner, it may be time to think about how you plan to reduce your homes energy and heat consumption. The most important thing to looks for is air infiltration, or where the air is moving around insulation.

"Air infiltration in a home is usually a combination of many small things" said Leo Wilineus.

One thing to look for is gaps or leaks; which lets the outside air in.

"We can demonstrate the importance of air infiltration comparing a cooler somewhat to your home. If you have ever been on a fishing trip or a camping trip for a few days you know a good quality cooler can keep foods fresh and cold for several days. But if we add a little air movement, just a small amount of air infiltration. Instead of being able to handle food and ice for several days, now we are just down to several hours", says Leo.

To combat these areas of infiltration, its best to find where the air is drafting in from the outside. A window can be one way you lose heat throughout the winter time, but there are several ways to prevent this.

"There is a lot of different weather strips that you can use to insulate doors wherever you have got drafts to seal that up" says Steve Marshall.

Where are other areas that are prone to air infiltration?

"The attic hatch should be very well insulated and should be sealed so that air doesn't go around the attic hatch" says Leo.

With some simple steps you can significantly improve the insulation of your home. In addition, according to Leo Wilenius at Lake Country power, a properly insulated home with minimal air infiltration could see heat savings from 25 to over 50 percent in cost savings annually.
