12 year old boy dies during basketball game in Baxter, Minn.

Baxter, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A 12 year old boy from Grand Rapids died Thursday night as he was warming up during a basketball game in Baxter, MN.

Baxter Police were called around 4:30pm to Forestview Middle School on the report of a medical involving a 12 year old who was participating in the 7th grade basketball game.

Authorities arrived immediately and attempted to perform life saving measures on the boy who appeared to be in cardiac arrest.

The boy was transported to Essentia St. Joe's Hospital where he later died. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will be conducting an autopsy.

The boy attended Robert J. Elkington Middle School in Grand Rapids. Principal Brent Brunetta says this tragedy has deeply impacted the school, but he is very proud of the support by the community during this tough time.

Principal Brunetta says multiple councilors are in place at the school today to help students and staff.
