Pine County, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Authorities have seized 135 animals from a farm in rural Pine County Minn. on allegations of animal abuse.

According to the Pine County Sheriff's Office, 12 horses, 21 dogs, 18 ducks and 84 chickens were taken from the farm along Holly Road after a month long investigation.

Officers say they found the animals in filthy conditions, with the dogs in make shift enclosures. Authorities also say the horses were starving when discovered and a veterinarian had to put two of them down due to their deplorable condition. At least one of the ducks was unable to float when placed in a cleaning tub.

The owner's identity is not being released at this time as the Pine County Attorney's Office reviews the case for possible charges.

The owner has 10 days to file a request for judicial review of the seizure of the animals. If the owner does not file a challenge, the Sheriff’s Office can humanely dispose of the animals on September 24.

Pending a judicial filing, the horses will be available for adoption through North Ridge Veterinary Service, LLC. The dogs suitable for adoption will also be available through the Pine County Guardian Angel Shelter on September 24th. Two of the dogs are pregnant and litters are expected soon.

The Pine Country Sheriff’s Department is accepting goodwill donations to defray the expenses involved in this seizure which included significant labor for round-up, transportation, care taking, alfalfa hay required for re-feeding, veterinary and lab fees, and deworming to facilitate their recovery.

Authorities estimate the cost of caring for the animals is more than $10,000.
