Cass County, MN (NNCNOW.com) ---- The Cass County Sheriff's Office K-9 has retired after nearly 7 1/2 years of service.

The Sheriff's Office purchased Portos, then a 2-year-old German Shepherd, in April of 2005.

Portos is from Poland and was bought with donations from citizens, businesses and organizations in Cass County.

Portos and his handler, Deputy Bill Connor, went through a 6 week training academy in Colorado which included narcotics detection, tracking, patrol and handler protection. Portos started working with Conner as a team in June 2005.

During Porto's nearly eight years of service with Cass County, he located more than 20 pounds of narcotics and was involved in the arrest and apprehension of over 150 suspects.

Portos last day of service with the Cass County Sheriff's Office was December 31 after he fell ill.

Deputy Conner will continue to care for Portos through his retirement years.

A new K9 named Yankee, a 2-year-old German Shepherd, was brought in to replace him.
