Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com)--- The Superior Police Department has gone a step further in protecting it's officers by adding a 47 thousand pound mine resistant ambush protected vehicle to its fleet.

The armored vehicle was used by the U-S military in Kuwait and will now be used by the Superior Police Department in active shooter situations and high risk calls.

The M-RAP is a $700,000 vehicle that the department received for $4,500, the price of shipping from Texas.

The vehicle was paid for out of the department's crime prevention fund..which is where a percentage of fines for city ordinance's go.

The car can go up to 65 miles per hour and is built for twelve officers but could fit more in emergency situations.

Officers will be able to access the vehicle quickly and help out other departments needing assistance.

"It's not to intimidate, it's not to cause issue, it's for protection that's what we look at it for . MRAP stands for mine resistant ambush protective vehicle, we don't expect to find any mines, but the ambush protective, the gun shots, that kind of stuff is what we want it for," said Sgt. Tom Champaigne.

The department says its hopes not to use the vehicle frequently.
