Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The St. Louis County Board is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the theft of copper wiring from contractors working on the Haines Road reconstruction project.

The theft was discovered Monday, March 11th, the day blasting was to begin at the site. The contractor, Hammerlund Construction, reported approximately 1,200 feet of wiring had been stolen overnight from three pieces of equipment. The loss is valued at approximately $40,000.

“We were lucky that the theft didn’t delay the project, but it could have,” said Commissioner Mike Forsman, who chairs the Public Works Committee for the County Board. “This is a significant project on a vital County road, and Commissioners felt it important to take a stand that we will not tolerate this crime.”

Because the theft occurred within the City of Duluth, the Duluth Police Department is investigating the case.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Duluth Police Department Property Crimes Bureau at (218) 730-5160.
