Cornucopia, WI (NNCNOW.com) - After bad weather and heavy snow forced their closure this week, the Apostle Islands Ice Caves gate re–opened Saturday morning.

According to National Park Service staff, cross country skis or snowshoes are strongly recommended to access the caves until the route's fresh snow is packed.

If you don't have them, rangers advise that you wait until Sunday.

A drop in temperatures has also made the trek bitterly cold, and proper winter gear and face protection is essential.

Wind gusts were reported at around 30 miles per hour around Cornucopia Saturday.
