Mankato, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The Cherry softball team won the MSHSL Class A state championship on Friday afternoon, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Blooming Prairie by a 2-1 score.
Eighth grader Joely Roberts scored on a passed ball to win the game for the Tigers, marking the program's first-ever state championship.
Cherry also becomes just the 11th team in state history to finish a season undefeated, the first since Maple River did so in 1996. The Tigers complete 2012 with a perfect (26-0) record.
Breann Gruenhagen was the offensive leader for Cherry, going 2-for-2 at the plate, and Shaina Novak pitched all seven innings to earn the win on the hill.
