Congressman Rick Nolan makes last minute trip to survey I-Falls flood damage

June 16, 2014 Updated Jun 16, 2014 at 1:19 PM CDT

International Falls, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Eighth District Congressman Rick Nolan has cancelled his planned schedule on Monday to travel to International Falls to meet with local officials and volunteers battling rapidly rising waters due to heavy rains in the region.

Heavy rains and high winds last week created near record flooding.
Since Thursday, thousands of sandbags have been distributed to low lying houses and areas along Rainy Lake, and the Rainy River.

On Friday, heavy rains caused Rainy Lake to rise by at least two feet.
Officials expect it to rise more still before it goes down.

Nolan had been scheduled to speak this morning at the Brainerd History Week kick-off, and then travel to Center City for a veteran's forum at the Chisago County Government Center from 3:00-4:30 pm.
The forum will be rescheduled for a later date.

We have a crew in International Falls and will have more on Nolan's visit on tonight's newscasts.
