Drivers Urged to Slow Down During Frigid Temperatures

January 22, 2013 Updated Jan 22, 2013 at 7:55 PM CDT

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Transportation officials are urging motorists in Northeastern Minnesota to slow down on the roads since salt is minimally effective in these kind of weather conditions.

Slippery conditions have been reported in the Northland, but crews are out trying to improve the roads.

Black ice, an invisible layer of ice that forms when warm and cold air meet, is also causing icy conditions. One of the most common areas where black ice forms is at intersections where exhaust freezes, condenses into water droplets then freezes on the pavement. Black ice can also quickly form on bridge decks ramps and in shady areas.

Motorists should remember to:

• Drive at safe speeds for winter driving conditions.
• Maintain safe stopping-distances.
