Essentia Clinic Reopening Friday

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- After extensive testing for two days at the Essentia Health First Street Building, crews have deemed the clinic clean and safe and will reopen on Friday.

On Tuesday, patients and staff were complaining of a strange odor that was making them feel dizzy and nauseous. Since then, the Essentia clinic has undergone comprehensive testing by multiple agencies.

Air samples collected by Arrowhead Consulting were sent to Galson Laboratories in New York to be tested. Those samples received a clean bill of health from Galson, which tested them to parts per billion.

While the air samples were being tested, Essentia facilities staff also examined the duct work, air handlers and roof vents and even opened up several walls to ensure there wasn’t something behind them affecting air quality.

“The lab findings, combined with the all-clear we received in the other tests, confirm that the building’s air is safe for patients and employees,” says Mike Metcalf, Executive Vice President of Clinic Operations in Essentia’s East Region. “While we would have liked to pinpoint the cause of Tuesday’s reported odor, we are confident there is no reason for the building to remain closed.”

Essentia officials say they will continue to be vigilant about monitoring air quality when the building reopens on Friday.
