March 26, 2013 Updated Mar 26, 2013 at 10:51 AM CST

Eveleth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Eveleth Police Department is implementing a new program to help keep citizens safe.

The department recognizes that certain members of the community may need to connect to someone on a daily basis to confirm their well-being.

The Senior Assistance Freedom Enrichment (SAFE) program focuses on those citizens. If the citizen does not call in, the police department will call the citizen or respond to their residence and check on their welfare.

To be a part of the program, citizens must be over the age of 60 years old, sufferring with physical and mental infirmities, and those who are over 18 years old and physically and mentally handicapped.

This is the first program of it's kind to be implemented in Minnesota.

If you wish to be a part of the program, contact the Eveleth Police Department to register.
