Fake Funeral Scam Alert

February 19, 2014 Updated Feb 19, 2014 at 1:07 PM CST

Madison, WI (NNCNOW.com) -- While going through your email you might be surprised to receive funeral announcement for a 'friend' of yours.

Authorities want people to be aware that it could all be fake. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) warn that scammers want you to open the email which will infect your computer with malicious software.

Typically the fake funeral announcement provides little information and directs you to a link for more information. If you receive one of these emails, you should delete it and do not click on the link.

We have attached a screen shot of an example of what one of these emails look like. A Wisconsin resident received one of these scam emails which claimed to be from Eubank Funeral Home and Cremation Services, a legitimate company. Be aware that similar scam emails may use other legitimate businesses names.

"The link will direct the browser to a foreign website from which a .zip file will automatically be downloaded. If this .zip file is opened, malware will be installed onto the victim's computer," DATCP said.
