Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Critically ill St. Louis County Commissioner Steve O'Neil was surrounded by his family as they said their last goodbyes Monday.

O'Neil is suffering from an aggressive and rare form of thyroid cancer.
According to a post on his Caring Bridge Site on Sunday, his family is at his side helping him with his final journey.

O'Neil's wife, Angie Miller, wrote that Commissioner O'Neil is very peaceful and sleeping most of the time.

Steve O'Neil has spent much of his adult life working on behalf of the poor.

O'Neil and his wife opened the doors of their Duluth home to the homeless nearly 25 years ago.

That decision led to the founding of "Loaves and Fishes," which now operates three homes in the tradition of the Catholic Worker Movement.

For the past two days, Loaves and Fishes current and past Volunteers have been holding a vigil in Steve's honor.

O'Neil turned 62-year-old on Monday.
