Madison, WI(NNCNOW.com) --- Gogebic Taconite has withdrawn its exploratory permit application and submitted a new application to the Wisconsin DNR to drill fewer holes in the Penokee Mine near Ashland.

The company is now proposing to drill only eight test holes instead of the 13 they had originally proposed in their first application.

Company officials say they removed five of the original test holes so they can gain additional information on stormwater issues.

The concern over the stormwater issues on the five drilling sites was identified during a May 14 inspection of the proposed drilling locations and access roads.

The DNR will review the new application and make a decision within ten business days.

GTAC can apply for a license to conduct additional testing in the future.
