Highway 1 South of Ely Reopens to Traffic

October 9, 2012 Updated Nov 7, 2012 at 3:48 PM CDT

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- Highway 1 south of Ely has reopened to motorists.

Drivers are now able to drive through the work zone, but are encouraged to drive slowly and watch for workers.

MnDOT also encourages motorists to watch for workers and advance warning signs in the work zone.

Flaggers will direct traffic in the work zone. Two additional layers are needed to complete this section; the remaining 1.5 mile long section has a gravel surface and paving will continue during the coming weeks.

Drivers have been required to use a lengthy detour all summer while crews worked on the project.

The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2012 and will completely reconstruct five miles of Highway 1. MnDOT officials say that it will provide a safer and smoother driving surface for motorists.
