Ice in the Duluth/Superior Harbor Prompts Ice Breaking Activities

December 27, 2012 Updated Dec 27, 2012 at 12:03 PM CDT

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Below freezing temperatures in the Twin Ports is creating ice in the harbor, prompting the U.S. Coast Guard to begin ice breaking operations.

The Cutter ALDER and several local tugs will conduct ice breaking operations to ease movement of commercial shipping throughout the Twin Ports.

Ice breaking will extend to the end of the shipping season which usually ends on January 16th.

All snowmobile, ATV operators, and other recreational users on the ice should avoid shipping channels as well as plan their activity carefully, and use caution near the ice.

Ice fishermen, especially, should use caution when placing their ice shacks in proximity to the shipping channels.
