Cairo, Egypt (NNCNOW.com) --- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Egypt's Foreign Minister announced a cease fire between Israel and Hamas today.
Clinton thanked Egypt's President personally and praised Egypt for taking on the peace talks.
"I want to thank President Morsi for his personal leadership to de-escalate the situation in Gaza and end the violence," said Clinton.
Many were worried about the new Muslim brotherhood government's stance when the conflict erupted 8 days ago.
"The people of this region deserve the chance to live free from fear and violence, and today's agreement is a step in the right direction that we should build on," added Clinton.
Clinton emphasized that a "durable outcome" of peace should follow the ceasefire.
This past week of violence in the Middle East led to the death of more than 140 Palestinians and five Israelis.
