Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Great Lakes "lakers" shipped only 3.8 million tons of Cargo in April, which the Lake Carriers' Association (LCA) says is a 50% decrease compared to last year.
LCA says Lake Superior's heavy ice is responsible for slowing transportation of cargo:

-Coal shipments in "lakers" totaled 630,000 tons in April, a decrease of almost 60% compared to last year.

So far this year, "lakers" shipped 6.9 million tons of cargo, which is a decrease of 45% compared to Jan.-May 13 2013.
The LCA adds that iron ore cargos are down 46%, coal is down by 41% and limestone is down by 47% year-to-date. We will have more on this story coming up on our evening newscasts.
