Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - When their East Grand Forks, Minnesota home was destroyed during the Red River Flood of 1997, Kirk Douglas and his family lost nearly everything.
As they picked up the pieces, the American Red Cross stepped in to help. First with food and then with a work crew to help them recover what was left of their belongings. Kirk was so impressed he decided one day he would repay that kindness.
After the flood he was hired by Cirrus Aircraft in Duluth and three years ago he became a volunteer with the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Since then he has worked with victims of several disasters. Later this month he will be honored as the chapter volunteer of the year.
