Bayfield, WI (NNCNOW.com) - A Bayfield man snowmobiling near Madeline Island Saturday afternoon died after falling through thin ice, staying submerged in icy water for 45 minutes.

According to the Ashland County Sheriff's Office, authorities received a call at 1:07 p.m. that James Hudson, 34, had fallen through thin ice while on his snowmobile. Authorities say Hudson was a local fishing guide and was ice fishing on Lake Superior Saturday, using his snowmobile to move around when it fell through the ice.

According to the Ninth Coast Guard District, a witness tried to rescue the man, but was unsuccessful as the witness kept falling through the ice himself.

The Coast Guard reports that an airboat crew from the Madeline Island Fire Department recovered Hudson, who was reportedly unresponsive.

According to the Coast Guard Hudson was in the 33-degree water for 45 minutes.

Coast Guard officials say Hudson was transported to Memorial Hospital in Ashland, where he was pronounced dead.

Hudson is the husband of Northland photographer, Hannah Hudson, whose picture of a man swimming with his dying dog went viral.

The Coast Guard reminds people to never go on frozen waterways alone, always letting someone onshore know of their location and plan to return.
