Bemidji, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- A 36 year old man is awaiting charges after he allegedly led police on a car chase, resulting in crashing the car he was driving in a ditch, and fleeing on foot.
At 6:39 p.m. on Wednesday, an officer attempted to stop a Lincoln Aviator for a traffic violation on Bemidji Avenue in the area of 6th Street NW.
The 36-year-old man, formerly of Blackduck, made an effort to avoid the officer by increasing his speed and making abrupt turns onto other streets.
The officer says he activated his emergency lights when the Aviator made unsafe turns and started driving with out lights on.
Police pursued the vehicle through residential neighborhoods until it made an attempt to leave the city.
Authorities say the Aviator left the roadway and crashed into the ditch approximately seven miles north of Bemidji in Northern Township.
Authorities say the driver proceeded to flee the scene into the woods and was apprehended soon after.
The man was taken to Sanford Medical Center for evaluation; from there he was transferred to Fargo, North Dakota for treatment.
The case is under investigation.
