Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- A Wisconsin man who survived a fire in 1996 that took the lives of his five children and wife has died.

57 year old Kirk Foley passed away unexpectedly on December 14th. According to the Duluth News Tribune, Foley died of a chronic stomach ulcer condition that unexpectedly became acute.

Back in 1996, Foley's five children 8 year old Kelly, 7 year old Tim, 5 year old Katie, 2 year old Lauren and five month old Shawn and his 33 year old wife Nancy all died in a tragic house fire in the family's 90 year old cedar log home in Hurley, WI.

Kirk Foley, an attorney in Hurley at the time, escaped from the flames, however he received burns over ten percent of his body while attempting to rescue his family.

In Kirk Foley's obituary, his family says that he will be remembered for being a dedicated father and husband.

"He enjoyed reading, politics, and was a ski instructor. He was a hobby farmer with a yearly vegetable garden, raising pigs and various small animals and loved planting and harvesting his fruit trees. Kirk, you have gone before us yet we know we will meet again - you will watch over us and be our guardian angel - gone but never forgotten."

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorials be made to an education fund for Foley's 11 year old daughter, Lora.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at ST.JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 306 Ellwood St., Dodgeville. Father Patrick Wendler will officiate. Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of Mass on Friday at ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH.
