Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Before the Blue Angels Air Show kicks off this weekend, Navy Week is being celebrated in Duluth.

Through a week–long series of community events, members of the USS Minnesota will get to know Duluth and teach Northlanders what the Navy is all about.

"Just to communicate [what the Navy is about], put a face on the Navy," said USS Minnesota Master Chief, Steve Williams, "They might hear it on the news, see it in the paper, but it's an opportunity for the community to ask us questions, face–to–face, and understand what it is that we do."

Navy Week puts the U.S. Navy closer to people in cities which do not have a significant naval presence. Through a series of community service events, the week is a way to increase understanding of what the Navy does.

"It's just another way that the Navy can say, 'Hey. We're out there,'" said Williams, "We try to make ourselves available to the public as much as possible."

Since 2005, the Navy has done 148 Navy Weeks in 62 cities across the country.
