Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- One of the most needed items for the less fortunate this winter season is a pair of socks and the Salvation Army in Duluth has just received a helping.

Nearly 3,000 socks were donated to the Salvation Army this morning along with a $2,200 check from Fond Du Luth Casino.

The Salvation Army is deep into their toy drive for the holiday season, however they are reporting they are still about 15 to 20 percent behind.

Officials say they could use some extra bell ringers and are hoping that an increase in donations comes soon.

"1,667 families have applied for Christmas assistance and that represents almost 2,900 children," says Major William Cox of the Salvation Army. "We'll be looking for toys and items and now we've got socks to go with that."

If you would like to donate or volunteer, you can log onto the Salvation Army's website.
