Virginia, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Northlanders took time Friday night to remember the lives lost in Connecticut.

A small group of about 20 people gathered at Children's Memorial Park in Virginia to hold a candle light vigil.

Those taking part say their hearts break for the families of those lost today and the tragedy prompted them to hold the event.

"We know there is nothing we can do to ease the pain these families are suffering, but our hearts ache for them and all we have to give are our prayers, our thoughts and send our love to those children," said Holly Spence, one of the organizers.

"My heart breaks for these families," added Amanda Debreto. "I can't believe this could happen at an elementary school or anywhere for that matter. I pray for those families and the family of the mother who was killed by her own son."

The group had Pastor Brad Felix lead them in prayer.
